What is the Devī Bhāgavatam? ▼
The Śrīmad Devī Bhāgavatam is one of the eighteen Mahā-Purāṇas — the great Sanskrit encyclopedias of Hindu thought compiled by the sage Vyāsa. Unlike other Purāṇas centered on Viṣṇu or Śiva, this one is devoted entirely to the Goddess, Devī.
Across 12 books and 318 chapters, it weaves together cosmology, myth, philosophy, and devotion. It opens with a striking premise: even Viṣṇu, the preserver of the universe, acts only through the Goddess's power. From there it traces creation, the family trees of the gods, the great battles against demons, and the theology of Śakti — the idea that the ultimate reality is feminine energy itself.
The translation here is by Swami Vijñānananda, published 1921–22, and is in the public domain. It is faithful and complete, if dated in style.
