પ્રસ્તાવના

વૈષ્ણવો માટે શ્રીમદ્ ભાગવત જે છે, શાક્તો માટે દેવી ભાગવતમ્ તે જ છે. બે ભાગવતોની પ્રાચીનતાના પ્રશ્ન પર ઘણી વખત ગંભીર વિદ્વાનોની ભાવનાને બદલે પક્ષપાતીઓની ભાવનાથી ચર્ચા થઈ છે. આ ગ્રંથનો સંપૂર્ણ અનુવાદ પ્રકાશિત થાય ત્યાં સુધી અમે આ વિષય પર અમારો અભિપ્રાય સ્થગિત રાખીએ છીએ.

Dedication

This work is dedicated to the memory of Rāi Bāhādur Śrīś Chandra Vidyārnava, a dear friend of the translator who first urged him to take on this monumental project. The dedication is offered in reverence to his memory.

Foreword

Just as the Śrīmad Bhāgavatam holds the place of highest honor among the Vaishnava traditions, so the Devī Bhāgavatam occupies that same supreme position among the Śāktas — those who worship the Divine Mother as the ultimate reality.

Scholars have long debated which of the two texts was composed first. Rather than weighing in here, the translator sets the question aside, preferring to let the complete translation speak for itself.

The translator's close friend, the late Rāi Bāhādur Śrīś Chandra Vidyārnava, was the one who first encouraged him to take up this work. Vidyārnava had studied both Bhāgavatas deeply and held the firm view that the Devī Bhāgavatam was the older of the two — and that the more widely known Śrīmad Bhāgavatam was in fact a later composition, possibly compiled by the grammarian Bopadeva. It is to Vidyārnava's sacred memory that this translation is lovingly dedicated.

This book — the Śrīmad Devī Bhāgavatam — is the sacred scripture of the Śāktas, the devotees of the Divine Mother. It holds the same central place in their tradition that the Śrīmad Bhāgavatam holds for Vaishnavas.

The English translation was completed by Swami Vijñānananda and published in 1921–22. He dedicates it to his late friend Śrīś Chandra Vidyārnava, who had encouraged him to undertake it. Vidyārnava believed the Devī Bhāgavatam to be the older, original text — and that the more famous Bhāgavatam was a later work by the grammarian Bopadeva. The translator holds his judgment on that debate in reserve, letting the full translation speak for itself.
