Who they are: Shumbha is the ruler in Book 5’s second great battle cycle. He hears of the Goddess’s beauty and treats her as something to be acquired. The Goddess answers by making the battlefield a lesson in sovereignty: she cannot be owned.

- Sends messengers and generals after the Goddess.
- Dies when the Goddess withdraws her emanations and fights him directly.
