One-line: king of the gods: powerful, insecure, often in trouble, and never beyond karma.
First appears: Book 6, in Book 6 retelling.
Who they are: Indra is the ruler of heaven, but the Devi Bhagavatam is very interested in his flaws. Book 6 is his big character study: Indra kills, schemes, panics, hides, loses his throne, and is restored only through the Goddess’s deeper power. He is divine, but not morally frictionless.
What they do that matters:
- Kills Trishira and then Vritra through morally compromised strategies.
- Suffers Brahmahatya, the sin of killing a Brahmin.
- Is humbled again in Book 12 when the Goddess appears as a column of light.
Other names: King of the Devas
Family / lineage (when relevant): Husband of Sachi.
