Who they are: Durga is the Goddess as protector and fighter. In Book 5, when Mahishasura has taken heaven and no male god can kill him, the gods’ combined power blazes into a many-armed Goddess. That form becomes the iconic lion-riding Durga.
What they do that matters:
- Kills Mahishasura after the gods lose their kingdom.
- Fights Shumbha and Nishumbha through her emanations.
- Appears in Book 9 as one of the five great forms of Prakriti.
